Report
Forty-seven crews signed on at Tacla Taid, the Anglesey Transport Museum, on a beautiful warm sunny Saturday morning. After a drivers’ briefing by chief organiser Ilan Roberts, the cars left the start from 10 am, embarking on a scenic route of about 100 miles.
Heading from Newborough, through Malltraeth, Aberffraw and Llanfaelog, the route headed to Valley and Trearddur Bay, and skirted Holyhead Mountain, From Holyhead town, crews followed the A5 past Penrhos Country Park, via Valley to Caergeiliog, then Bryngwran and Gwalchmai before taking a left to Bodffordd.
From Bodffordd it was north-west along the B5109 to Trefor and then north towards Llanddeusant and a lunch halt at Melin Llynon with 50 miles completed. There was an opportunity for crews to enjoy their own picnic and, for those inclined, one of the famous Monuts available at the Mill.
The route resumed, heading north towards Llanrhyddlad and then left on the A5025 via Llanfaethlu and Llanfachraeth before taking a left onto the B5109 to Bodedern, Trefor and into Llangefni. Leaving Llangefni on the B5420 towards Menai Bridge, crews turned left before reaching Fourcrosses to pass the Penhesgyn Recycling Centre, to the A5025 and north to Pentraeth to turn west on the B5109. At Talwrn it was turn right along the unclassified road to join the B5110 and turn right towards Brynteg. At the California Inn it was left to Maenaddwyn and Llanerch-y-medd and the B5111 towards Amlwch, but turning left before Rhosybol towards Rhosgoch, Llanfechell and Cemaes to take a right at the A5025 and then a left to finish at the Gadlys Hotel.
The event proved to be a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved, although one or two crews experienced problems and did not quite complete the course. Together with the raffle run in conjunction with the Tour, C&A Motor Club was able to present £2,500 to the LimbBo Foundation.
THANKS
There are many people to thank for their contribution to the success of the event. Sponsorship from Bragdy Lleu, Cefni Garage, G.W.Services and Ilan Roberts covered the cost of the supplies required to run the event, such as rally plates, roadbook, Motorsport UK permit and the entries system.
Trophies were supplied free of charge by Dion Bee; William Hughes Civil Engineering allowed the use of their premises as a trailer park; Bryn Hughes and Victor Hughes, Autosmart, H.G.Jones Motors Ltd, Penygroes, and Rhys and Rhian Roberts were generous with prizes for the raffle.
Mei of Pantglas Body Repairs selected Ken Jones (Autospray) of Amlwch’s Escort as Best Presented Car and Adam Dengel, co-founder of the LimbBo Foundation UK selected Carwyn Ellis’s MST Mk1 as ‘Car of the Tour’. Organiser Ilan selected Rhys Roberts for his ‘Exceptional Support’ in the lead-up to the event.
Duncan Littler and Islwyn Jones were out and about taking photos. Alwen and Cadi Williams, and Dafydd Edwards were in charge of signing-on for all the crews. Aaron Whitmore was responsible for the route and was course opening car, and Peredur Davies produced the roadbook whilst Dafs and Jen Roberts fulfilled the duties of course closing car. Thanks also to Huw Gwyn Jones and Merfyn Williams for their support.
To add to the £2,500 raised for The LimbBo Foundation UK by the event, we were able to collect more than £500 to add to that sum at the Vintage Rally the following weekend.
