Report
Report by the winning driver Deio Hughes.
This event was organised by Dion Bee as a summer 90th anniversary Navigation Run. He set out a very challenging, compact and tough route; there would be be no “clean sheets” at the results.
With the sun shining - this factor played a big part on the event with symbols been incredably hard to find. The event started at Fferm Glanrhyd, with a simple short 14 mile route advertised prior by Dion. I always knew it wasn't going to be simple. The route was plotted and with six out of the eighteen plots all being in
the same box it was obvious that tidy plotting was needed as there was no time for mistakes as nearly all the roads where yellows or whites where symbols counted, so nowhere to make time back up . A short run out to Tregarth with a loop over Mynydd Llandygai then into the Bethesda.
Bethesda was a maze using nearly every road there including the housing estates. I think every crew wrong slotted here somewhere as everyone saw each other at least once. Eventually we made our way out toward Rachub and Llanllechid where Dion again used every trick in the book to catch competitors out and keeping the navigators on their toes with narrow lanes and various NAM diagrams. Then headed towards Tal- y-Bont and finally a short loop through the ford at Llandygai and finishing at Bangor. Even though the route was only 14miles and the crews had two hours to complete the plotting and the route it seemed a fair amount of time at the start.
Every crew except for Lee Matthews arrived at the finish venue a couple of minutes late. Lee did admit that he had cut the route to make it there on time. The event had only four entries but every crew enjoyed the event from what was discussed at the finish at TableTable, Parc Menai.
After a short time marking the score cards Dion revealed the results. Fourth place with 19 points were Sion Matthews and Winnie Chen. Even though Sion regularly puts on the winter series Navigation Runs this event had tested his knowledge and experience. In third
with 22 points Kyle and Jacob; young lads and new to the sport it was nice to hear that they had enjoyed and gained experience from this event with more to come, carry on lads!
In second place with 29 point, Lee Matthews who did this event alone and seemed to have struggled to see the symbols on the passenger side of the car, but credit where credit is due to go around Bethesda on your own, well done Lee.
First place with 37 point Deio Hughes and Cian Evans. Originally they had 39 points but failing to arrive back on time they had a 2 symbol deduction. Nevertheless the crew where extremely chuffed to have won the event as the navigator had only started plotting at 17:30 friday evening. Thanks to Dion for organising a sterling event well put together.
1. Deio Hughes & Cian Evans - 37points
2. Lee Matthews on his own - 29points
3. Kyle Jones & Jacob Bolton - 22points
4. Sion Matthews & Winnie Chan - 19points
